10 alternative ideas you can do in 30 seconds to increase the life of your clothes

We all know that feeling when you find that perfect piece of clothing—the one that fits like a dream, makes you feel like a million bucks, and instantly becomes a staple in your wardrobe. But how do you make that love affair last? Fear not, because I've got you covered with 10 quick and easy tips to increase the lifespan of your beloved garments—all in under 30 seconds! Let's dive in:

  • Wash clothes inside out at 30° or lower, as heat damages clothes over time, and being inside out reduces friction on the visible parts of the garment.
  • Smooth the fabric out with your hands when wet, to dry the garment without wrinkles, so as to reduce the need for additional hot iron stress
  • Use white vinegar in place of softener- it makes it just as soft, and unlike softener- it doesn’t coat your clothes in damaging plastic, it doesn’t ruin your machine and it deodorises, leaving no scent. You can also add essential oils to the wash or use an after wash spritz spray.
  • A bobble off remover gently shaves off pilling- these are best used on thicker fabrics to reduce wear. For thinner fabrics, try sellotape pulling.
  • Faded knees? Murky colour after wash? White and light coloured fabrics can be dyed in a wash cycle using Dylon washing machine pods. These add colour, they don’t change it, so consider what colour they are now, and what they would be once colour is added- works perfect for jeans in particular. Chuck the dye pod in the machine and let it dye the pieces for you.
  • Apply washing liquid immediately to stains, leave to soak, rinse out, hang dry.
  • Consider wearing looser fitting clothes so they can be washed less.
  • Baggy knees? Spritz the baggy area and blow dry. The heat will steam the fabric and close up some of the stretched gaps. You could hhitch up your trousers before you sit down or bend your knees, to reduce the pressure on the fabric, and give off a certain vibe…
  • Hang dry, don’t tumble! If you’re in the British winter, look in to heated rails and dehumidifiers- both use less energy and cause less stress to clothing than tumbling- be sure you’re using a renewable energy supplier such as Octopus.

And there you have it—10 simple yet effective ways to increase the life of your clothes in under 30 seconds! With just a little bit of time and effort, you can keep your wardrobe looking fresh, fabulous, and ready for anything.
